Detail photos of Sokka's Space Sword from Avatar the Last Airbender. Crafted by Johny mainly from MDF, this is the first wood piece he's made entirely from scratch. The wrap on the hilt is made from nylon lace in traditional Japanese method, despite the sword being based loosely on the Chinese Jian. The details on the crossguard are shaped from balsa wood and the White Lotus tile on the base of the pommel was sculpted in Super Sculpey and then attached. The scabbard is completely felt line in order to protect the finish on the sword. And yes, the blade is a dark metallic color. I'm pretty sure that was the question I received most as Sokka at the con when it was sheathed and the exclamation I received most when it wasn't.
Nope. The whole thing is constructed from MDF, a medium density particle-type wood product. Very light and easy to use, though in the future Johny hopes to use pine for future projects for added strength and stability. Glad you like it!
